Quantum of Solace

I was reading “For Your Eyes Only” this morning and I noticed that the title of one of the chapters was “A Quantum of Solace”. Perhaps you already new the meaning of the film title but if not here is the text from the book:

The Governor paused and looked reflectively over at Bond. He said: ‘You’re not married, but I think it’s the same with all relationships between a man and a woman. They can survive anything so long as some basic humanity exists between the two people.  When all kindness has gone, when one person obviously and sincerely doesn’t care if the other is alive or dead, then it’s just no good. That particular insult to the ego – worse, to the instinct of preservation – can never be forgiven. I’ve noticed this in hundreds of marriages. I’ve seen flagrant infidelities, patched up, I’ve seen crimes and even murder forgiven by the other party, let alone bankruptcy and every other form of social crime. Incurable disease, blindness, disaster – all these can be overcome. But never the death of common humanity in one of the partners. I’ve thought about this and I’ve invented a rather high-sounding title for this basic factor in human relations. I have called it the Law of the Quantum of Solace.’

I though it was interesting anyway 🙂

British Grand Prix

Please don't go Dad

Please don't go Dad

Yesterday I made my annual trip to Silverstone to help marshal the spectators at the British Grand Prix. It was a strange event this year as it was supposed to be the last time we’d be at Silverstone, but doubts about Donnington mean many people expect to be back at Silverstone in 2010. Bad timing also meant that I missed my first Father’s Day so me and Jessica decided I could celebrate being a Dad on the 22nd.

We’re usually given a free programme and sometimes a baseball cap but this year the organisers also gave us a polo shirt – maybe they’re getting rid of all the stock before they lose the GP!

Our accomodation

Our accommodation

We had a capacity crowd of 120,000 on the Sunday with a large number of them sporting Jensen Button caps. Unfortunately for them Button was unable to improve on his grid spot, finishing in sixth. Vettel seemed to be in a completely different race and had no trouble leading for the majority of the race before winning. Hamilton was fun to watch but wasn’t able to get anywhere near the points – on the warm down lap he decided to do a donut right in front of where we were marshalling… which was nice.

Thankfully it looks like we’ll be required next year for the marshalling regardless of where the GP takes place. I’ve managed to get to eight consecutive ones now and it is something of a tradition. There is even talk of two Grand Prixs in Britain next year with the possibility of us hosting the European one.

As usual I wasn’t allowed to take any photos of the on track action so if you want to see more try the official site here.

New feature – Jessica film ratings

Does anyone know of a website where I can get information on how scary/graphic a film is without ruining the plot? Last week I watched “Cloverfield” with Jessica and although I thought the film was excellent, she was expecting to have nightmares after it. This time I have got “I am legend” which stars Will Smith therefore, Jessica thinks it will be fine… however a quick search of the BBFC website says it contains strong violence so perhaps it won’t be.

The BBFC pages are interesting but you can only get the full picture if you read the extended classification information which contains spoilers.

For now I’ll continue to provide the Jessica rating on this site – which means she may be traumatised a few times more.

Cloverfield – Not suitable for Jessicas of any age. Features bloody bits, high scariness factor and eakish moments. If forced to watch, suggest cushion and ear plugs be used.

We wanna be… Smiiiiiiths Crisps!

Remember that?

Anyway, in a departure from the usual blog stuff I have some snack news. I finally managed to track down all the new Walkers flavours and me and Jessica have tried four of them so far.

  • Builder’s breakfast – do not try these unless the concept of egg crisps sounds good to you.
  • Chilli and chocolate – I managed to eat a few of these but the cocoa flavour doesn’t fit with crisps.
  • Cajun Squirrel – nice but nothing brilliant… like a mild Worcestershire sauce.
  • Crispy duck and hoi sin – the best yet… pretty much captures the taste.

More snow

Stuck at home today – I think a lot of BBC staff are attempting to use the remote access software and as a result it isn’t letting me in 🙁

There are some advantages though – the view from my desk is much better.

It’s snow joke

Had to use the pun on the blog – Jessica has forbidden me from using them in the house until Samuel is old enough to groan in dismay. Just wanted to upload this picture I took from an upstairs window… I don’t fancy my chances of getting to work tomorrow.

Coins and Sam

Have you noticed the weird design on the back of some of last year’s coins? Steve and I collected one of each value and put them together to form the image on the left.

In other news, I’ve created a special section of the site where I am going to stash some videos of Sam. It’s password protected so if you’d like to have a look send me an e-mail and I’ll give you the details.

The videos are in the same format as the one in this post so if you can see that you should have no problems with the others.
