If you like small cute mammals – take a look at these hamsters. I can only assume they are looking at something above them – it reminds me of the stories of helicopters flying low over penguins causing them all to fall over.
Last night at badminton I tried out the new rules that may be introduced at my club. To summarise the rules (for doubles):
- A point is scored on every rally regardless of which side is serving.
- A pair only has one serve – on winning the serve, the server is decided by examining the pairs score – an odd score means the player on the left serves, an even the right.
- Players within a pair only switch sides when a point is won on their serve (this is the same as the current rules).
- The first pair to 21 points wins (except as below)
- If both sides reach 20 points the winning team is the one that gets two clear points ahead or reaches 30 points first.
There is likely to be a survey of club members to see if they are willing to change to the new system. Feelings were mixed with the majority of players hating the new way of scoring. I thought the new system would be too confusing but I grasped it pretty quickly. Games are shorter now and mistakes are punished more readily- but there are upsides and downsides to both of these. I think the best move would be to go with the new system to keep us in-line with the rest of the world.
On the way home I saw a small mouse/shrew thing (fuzzy picture attached) whilst I was waiting for the bus.
Our house move went reasonably smoothly and we are now trying to unpack those last few boxes so that we can invite people over without making them sign a safety disclaimer. Thankfully all Jessica’s things fitted in the van (pictured) easily and I only had to drive to Isleworth once. Driving the van was not the most pleasant experience (1st gear seemed to do nothing) but we returned the van and got all our deposit back thanks to our bump-free travels.
The phone line should be connected next Monday and then broadband will follow 2-3 weeks later. I will try to put up some new pictures before then but the web-based uploading facilities (that I have to use at work) are painfully slow and involved.
In the meantime, have a look at this neat picture trick.
I just ran a spell-check on this post and it suggested I replace “Jessica’s” with “cheesecake” – fantastic!
Last Friday night I traveled up to Silverstone after work. This was so I could once again be a spectator marshal for the British GP (my 5th time). Dad came along too for his second year and once again he brought a large collection of camping equipment (marshals stay on a campsite). There are a few pictures from the event but I will not be able to put them up for a while due to the house move (see later).
The actual race was a little boring this year and my prediction of Raikkonen to win was incorrect (he came 3rd). Much more exciting was the GP2 race that preceded the Formula One. The crowd really got behind (potential F1 driver) Lewis Hamilton as he came from 10th on the grid to win the race.
A lot of people seemed intent on watching the England game on one of the three screens that would be showing the match. So high was the demand that all the screens on the track showed the football whilst the first GP2 race was being run. Why people would spend money to get into the event and then not watch it I have no idea.
If you were at the event – congratulations if you noticed that some of the Officials had “Offical” written on their tabards. It took us a while to spot this even after an Offical had asked us to “Spot the deliberate mistake”.
On Monday me and Jessica scribbled on the agreement for our new flat. We are due to move our stuff in very soon and we are praying that Ikea have the bits we want in stock whilst we have a van. The flat itself was a little disappointing as it had not been cleaned after the last occupants – we swept up a bit last night and it is almost ready to receive our possessions. The phone will not be connected for a fortnight and then there will be a wait for broadband after that. Hopefully I can put my GP photos up at work.
Just one more post before the British GP/flat moving madness kicks in. This site features 10,000 hand-drawn pictures of sheep which were drawn by people who were paid 2 cents for each of their creations. I think there is some mechanism by which you can buy a selection of unique sheep stamps and expect the site will make a lot of money for the creator.
See you after the madness 🙂
Everyone is talking about the 6/6/06 thing today but I ain’t too bothered. I feel for any children born on this day though, they will have to put up with comments for the rest of their life.
To lighten the mood – take a look at this… anyone who has ever been to a park with me knows that I always look for the fountains/water-features. Now you can create your own with sweets and coke 🙂
I expect there will be a bit of a lull in blog postings as me and Jessica prepare to move house. In the meantime here is another interesting lego creation.
I am going to the British GP to be a spectator marshal again – hopefully I can get some good pictures and I can get them up on here after the event. We’ll have no broadband for a while so will have to try and find another connection.
The final get together in my (soon to be) old house happened on Saturday. Steve joined me, Jessica and Matt for a few drinks and a game or two. We played Jenga for a while before getting (Jessica’s favourite) “Simpsons Game of Life” out – I won for a change 🙂
On Sunday me and Jessica went bowling with Cara and Nick. Jessica did impressively well… she claimed she was going to beat me before coming clean and admitting she wasn’t very good at it. The letters on the score are confusing so for game 1 : Cara – 58, Roboshrew (Nick) – 69, Fuzzy (Me) – 130 and Conan (Jessica) – 97. An impressive double-strike from Jessica, but this was offset by her releasing the ball on one of her back swings and causing Cara’s life to flash before her eyes.
I think Jessica will be putting some pictures of these events up soon.
On the left is an image of a character from the game Dragon Quest. Jessica hopes to one day buy this game as she had fun playing the demo. Also, the character’s name is Jessica!
On the right is the character Jessica Cannon from a game I might one day play – “Sin episodes”. Ms Cannon seems to share some characteristics with her Dragon Quest namesake – a similarity in hair colour and a kind of twin bunches approach to the hair style.
I just thought it was interesting that Jessica is a popular character name at the moment and that they seem to have the same style. Perhaps the name popularity is nothing to be surprised by – Jessica will tell you (if asked) that her name was the most popular girls name in 2004!
Having a relaxing time at my parents house at the moment. I just wanted to quickly post a funny thing Jessica said last night – if I had a “daftness of Jessica” page it would go there but instead it will have to be blogged.
We were watching Jonathan Ross’ show last night and he was introducing William Shatner. He started off by saying that Mr. Shatner was currently the face of All Bran and finished his introduction with the phrase “Set bowels to stun”. Jessica only heard the last bit of this phrase and leapt to Mr. Shatner’s defence by saying “Just because he has an unfortunate last name!”. I thought Jessica’s introduction was much better than Mr. Ross’.
I hope to bring more “From the mouth of Jessica” to you soon.
