BBQing at Tea Towers

Before the hordes descended

As the grass is starting to turn a fetching shade of brown and all the school children are just about to be released from their classes we decided it was time for our (now annual) summer BBQ. So after giving the house a thorough clean and with some help from one of our lovely neighbours to erect a marquee we were ready to receive all our guests.

We were lucky with the day we picked for the event as the weather couldn’t have been nicer, so sunny with a touch of a breeze to stop you over heating. With the aid of the marque we were able to have a lot of our guests gather outside – fortunate really as there just wouldn’t have been room for everyone in Tea Towers itself.

The hungry hordes descend

Rich manned the BBQ and kept all our hungry guests well supplied with burgers, sausages and some rather tasty teryaki chicken kebabs. While he was out slaving over the burning coals I was rushing about the kitchen trying to make sure all the guests had cold drinks/jacket potatoes/forks and anything else they wanted. (Apologies to any guests I may have snapped at – I sometimes get a little carried away when hostessing!)

Once all the food had been cooked I treated myself to a nice glass of wine and started to relax and enjoy the party properly. Sam spent most of his time running backwards and forwards, usually after one of the other kids that was there and enjoyed himself so much that he barely had time to come past and say hi to his mum. The guests all seemed to have a lovely time too, there was plenty of chatter and laughter around the house and apart from having to occasionally kick helpful guests out of my kitchen I think they all went home happy.

Thank you all so much for coming and making our party a success – we loved having you all and will now have fun trying to drink through all the alcohol you left behind…

Family holiday

Sam enjoys the toys

Last week we spent a happy week up North at Center Parcs in the Lake District. We travelled up on the Friday and attended my cousins wedding on the Saturday. Samuel was reasonably quiet during the service except for the last bit where he was allowed to roam into a section of the church with toys… members of the congregation with good ears heard a crash, shortly followed by an “Oh oh” from Sam. At the reception Samuel played with the toys that his Great Aunt had bought for him and was fascinated by the disco where he spent a while doing his signature dance.

Sam relaxing in his trailer

On the Monday we made the 2 hour drive to the Whinfell Forest ‘branch’ of Center Parcs. Samuel brought a healthy supply of minions in the form of Cara, Nick and his Grandparents. Our lodge was reasonably close to the village centre so we didn’t have to use our bikes too much. We enjoyed our last Center Parcs trip but this one was even better as Samuel is walking around and could enjoy things like the little trolleys in the park market. Everything was quite busy as it was half-term but we got the chance to play a bit of badminton and discovered that I’m rubbish at table tennis. Whinfell is a red squirrel conservation zone and we had spotted quite a few of them during our five day stay. It’s the first time I’ve seen the (smaller) red squirrel – they seemed much more bouncy than their grey cousins, jumping about all over the place.

Archery pros

We had a lovely time and I think the minions did too. Me and Jessica got to have a bit of free time, trying out some archery and ensuring that Jessica got her standard strawberry and cream frappuccino. Samuel always develops a huge amount when there are so many people around to pay him attention. When we started the holiday he was saying around 5 different words and now he’s approaching 30 words – the days of everything being a car seem to be behind us 🙂

Samuel has an enquiring mind

Samuel learning about water dynamics

Last week Sam and I made a visit to the Science museum as we had heard very good things about an area that they have in the basement called “The Garden“. The area is really aimed at 3 year olds+ but a lot of the interactive displays seemed to appeal to Sam anyway. He especially loved the water course that they had where you could block off the flow of water through a number of different runs and see how it effected the flow of water… however I think the main appeal for Sam was playing with the boats and splashing.

There is a great section with large soft lego pieces and a winch for getting beanbags to the top of a flume before sending them plummeting back down. They’ve also got some musical bits – in fact Sam enjoyed playing with a set of buttons that played different notes so much that I had to practically drag him away so that we didn’t miss the bubble show.

One of Sam’s newest words is ‘bubble’ and he really loves watching them and chasing them… however I was worried at the start of the show that we would get kicked out as the children were asked not to stand up or pop any bubbles… oh ooooh. However Sam seemed to be mesmirised by the show and all the other children sitting so well that he wasn’t a problem. We both enjoyed wafting bubbles to keep them in the air and the finale of the huge bubble that were made encasing a couple of children was also very impressive.

We both had a great day out and hopefully will return some time soon bring daddy with us 🙂

The last month & Happy New Year

There has been a definite lull in my activity on the blog over the last month so I thought I’d give a quick digest of what I’ve been up to.

Samuel with one of his new toys

First of all there was Christmas… we were lucky enough to have my parents to visit this year so Samuel got to spend Christmas day with Grandad and Grandma. Jessica prepared a lovely Christmas dinner and Samuel had a great time with so many people there to entertain him. I have a mountain of chocolate to get through post Christmas and have so far only dented the surface.

This was before I had a drink

For New Years Eve, Cara and Nick took time out of their busy social calendar to spend the last evening of the decade with me and Jessica. As Samuel slept soundly we made some predictions for 2020 and enjoyed a game of Taboo whilst eating Pizza and a hastily assembled cheese board. We pulled the last of the festive crackers and I invented Elton-vision (above).

He enjoyed himself, honestly

On New Years Day we went to Kelsey park where Sam had a go on the swings and I fed the squirrels. The squirrels in the park are really tame and a lot of people bring nuts along to feed them by hand.

Squillie enjoys a cashew

We’re hoping that 2010 will be a quiet year for our family so we can enjoy all Sam’s milestones and have a bit of a rest after our marriage-house-baby stress marathon. Things at work are all change with a move from Kingswood to W12 and a challenging project taking a lot of my time. I hope that you had a great holiday and are looking forward to an exciting year too.

Happy New Year!

Samuel likes chocolate

Samuel wanted more buttons

Samuel wanted more buttons

Well there’s a surprise! Jessica and I made a lovely chocolate cake for Samuel’s birthday but when we offered him some he didn’t seem to like it. We started to wonder… have we got a baby that doesn’t like chocolate?

Yesterday we had round 2, offering Sam some chocolate buttons. The buttons had been in the fridge so when I put the first one in his mouth he let it fall out into my hand. Again wondering if Sam mightn’t become a chocoholic (like his parents) I tried once more. This time the button melted a little and Samuel took some time to consider the new taste sensation – shortly after he decided he did like chocolate after all and was treated to a few more buttons.

Last weekend Cara and Nick were kind enough to invite us over for a make-your-own-pizza session at their flat. I made a very nice mushroom, chicken and chorizo pizza and suitably nourished we set off to visit a local farmers market.

The farmers market was to be held in a local park and a large sign outside advertised that it ran from 10am until 8pm. Strangely none of us questioned why a market would run for 10 hours on a Sunday but we soon found that it only ran until 3. Having missed the market thanks to someone’s creative graffiti we looked for something else to do.

Sam had a go in the play-park before draining a bottle of aptamil and going to sleep. The ‘adults’ had an ice cream and went to play on what appeared to be some kind of assault course.

There are quite a few pictures from the day which we’ll get round to putting in the photo library soon. However, I wanted to share this one where we attempted to take a group photo on some parallel bars. The plan was simple – I would set the 10 second timer, run and vault onto the bars – taking my place in the photo. I completely failed, bouncing off the bar and landing on my rear. After this Jessica suggested that she could initiate the photo as she didn’t have to do any gymnastics to get in shot – how sensible 🙂
