Entertaining at Tea Towers

Tea timeBeing at home with Samuel so much has made me really appreciate the company of my friends and family, especially when I know that they have made a special trip out to come and see us. So I feel especially honored that we’ve had guests both today and yesterday.

Daniel came all the way down from Leicester on Sunday just to say hi and meet Samuel (and then went all the way back that evening- wheew!) and kept us entertained with stories of his hospital work. Daniel has delivered 3 babies himself as well as seeing a few births so it wasn’t too surprising that he was brilliant with Sam. Unfortunately Dan is too far away for us to trick into babysitting – but hopefully we’ll be able to visit him again soon – after doing the trip up to Yorkshire every trip seems possible now πŸ™‚

I’ve also just had some work friends round for midmorning tea and really enjoyed getting a chance to chat with some other girls over tea and cake, it even gave me the opportunity to use the lovely tea set that I got a few years ago. One of these friends is pregnant herself and will be having a little girl in April so we both enjoyed a good chat about baby stuff and hopefully we’ll be able to see each other more often now we are both on maternity leave.

Ah well – now to get some tidying up done while Sam sleeps, it’s not all just tea and cake you know!

Daniel visits

img_0069Our friend Daniel braved a Sunday train system (plagued with engineering works) to come down and visit us, meeting Samuel for the first time. Jessica cooked us a lovely roast dinner whilst we caught up with Daniel’s adventures in the midlands.

As usual… Samuel doesn’t look too impressed to be meeting another new person but he was actually very comfortable with Daniel. Me and Jessica were very impressed with Daniel’s holding skills – much better than mine when Sam was born.

Thanks for making the long trip Daniel, hopefully we’ll at least be able to meet you half-way next time.

Adventures in Northland

Travelling SamWe’ve managed to make it back okay from deepest darkest Northland after having a lovely time with Rich’s family. My worries about taking Sam on such a long (and fiddly journey – 1 tram and 3 trains) trip were thankfully not realised as Sam was well behaved all the way there and all the way back again.

Sam seemed to really enjoy all the attention that he got, whenever he was awake there were at least two people around to entertain and amuse him, and most of the time you couldn’t see Sam for all the adults crowded around him cooing. His grandparents especially couldn’t resist his winning smile and would be more than happy to pick him up for a quick cuddle. Sam also got to meet his two great grandmas for the first time and both of them seemed so very happy to hold him and say hi. As well as this Sam got the chance to be admired by a few of Rich’s aunts and uncles and his dad’s cousins Drew and Ella (who would be his cousins once removed I think).

Rich and I also managed to get our first meal out together since Sam was born and really enjoyed going out to a fantastic Thai restaurant nearby while Sam stayed behind being looked after by his grandparents and aunt Cara. So after 5 days of being well cared for with tasty meals, lots of cups of tea and plenty of eager Sam helpers Rich and I both felt very rested and refreshed.

Thanks so much for looking after us Rich’s mum & dad and thanks again Cara for letting us take over your bedroom again.

Samuel visits Yorkshire (and Lancashire)

Last weekend Samuel finally got to travel up the country to meet my side of the family. This was a big event as it was Samuel’s first long trip and we planned to make it on the train so couldn’t take everything we might need. Thankfully we were able to arrange to have a travel cot, car seat and some other essentials waiting for us at my family home.

Samuel did very well and seemed to take the change of location in his stride, smiling for all the relatives he met. The list was long with 2 grandparents, 2 great grandparents, 3 great auntys, 3 great uncles, an aunty and two of my cousins. Samuel managed to charm everyone and he received plenty of new home offers but is unable to talk yet and was stuck with us. It was great to see everyone and I am sorry we can’t make the trip more often – thanks for all the presents and help we needed to make the visit possible.

Yet again Samuel chose a family event to debut a new skill – he now chuckles at the correct times when we play a game with him. The chuckle is currently either a huh-huh like noise or a full on squeal.

I musn’t forget Steve who helped us a great deal by taking care of Fidget whilst we were away. Unfortunately Fidget is still very frail but I did enjoy the story of her licking condensation off the window to try and avoid drinking her water with (presumably foul-tasting) antibiotics in.

Surprise!

img_0005Sam seems quite surprised to be wearing a Christmas vest in February… but that’s what happens when you are a difficult size and mum has run out of clean clothes that fit you.

Sam and I had another busy day yesterday, baby group in the morning and then a visit from Sam’s grandma in the afternoon. My mum and I had a lovely lunch (and I even got out my pretty tea set) while Sam cooed and watched us eating and chatting. After all this attention though he did spend most of the evening asleep which gave me enough time to do a bit of sorting and tidying in preparation for our trip up north.

So tomorrow the family Felton is heading off to Northland for our most ambitious journey with Sam yet. I’m not too sure how it is all going to work out (will Sam sleep on the train, will there be room for all the luggage, etc) but I’m really looking forward to spending some time with the lovely in-laws and getting a chance to show Sam off.

Wish us luck – we’ll be back soon and will hopefully have some more Sam pictures to show you.

Sam’s weigh in

Talkative SamSam is happy to be able to inform you that he now weighs an impressive 5.37kg (11lb 13 oz).

(The photo on the left is one one of the lovely shoots that Duncan managed to take of Sam on Sunday)

Fidget update:

Rich and I have been pretty worried about Fidget recently – last week she seemed to be twisted with her head tilted to one side and she fell over a lot. Because of being snowed in we didn’t take her to the vet and she seemed to recover on her own. However, on Monday night Rich saw Fidget having some sort of fit so on Tuesday we both took her to the vets expecting to hear the worst. Thankfully the vet seems to think that Fidget has an inner ear infection which is hopefully going to clear up after a week of antibiotics (if only she would drink it – naughty hamster!)

In other news I tried another yoga class last night and found it to be much better than the one I went to a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully after a few months of yoga I’ll be in much better shape and maybe even be able to squeeze myself into my old clothes again!

A busy weekend

Blurry SamSam was in great demand this weekend what with two separate dinner invitations for Saturday and Sunday. Sam’s first outing was on Saturday to visit aunt Cara and future uncle Nick and view their shiny new kitchen. Cara and Nick provided Sam’s mum and dad with some very tasty adult food which included some fantastic melt in the middle chocolate puds served with some very yummy home made ice cream – mmmmm.

Apart from a minor screaming fit when we first arrived Sam was in fine spirits and greatly enjoyed watching his parents having a go at the Raving Rabbits game on the Wii. While Sam was happy Nick took the chance to snap some photos with his impressive camera so hopefully some of his shoots will have come out and we’ll have some better quality photos of Sam.img_2012

On Sunday we hastened over to visit Matt and Steve at their flat as Steve was cooking up a large beef joint and needed some extra stomachs to help put it away (I’m always glad to help with such matters). Duncan also came over and was full of stories about his recent trip to New Zeland and brought along photos from his first ever sky dive. We all ate very well, the beef was delicious and came with all the trimmings and for dessert we had ‘chocolate eruptions’ which sounded very complicated to make but looked fantastic when they came out of the oven slowly oozing chocolate sauce from their tops (andΒ  they tasted great too). Duncan also took some Sam shoots with his impressive camera so hopefully he’ll send us a few more photos of Sam that we can share with you all soon.

The photo on the right is the only picture that we got of Nick and Sam from the weekend… don’t you think that Nick looks like he thinks Sam is about to explode at any moment? Caption suggestions anyone?

Igloing

Five days on from the creation of the igloo it is still standing but is now significantly smaller. There hasn’t been much in the way of new snow so it’s a tribute to BBC engineering that it has survived. I think today’s rain might be the final nail in the coffin though πŸ™
